Can You Bomb Your Way to Peace?
I'm not a war strategist. I don't read Clausewitz before bed. But when I saw the headlines about Ukraine’s massive drone strike—117 drones, $7 billion in damage, 40 Russian warplanes taken out—I couldn’t help but wonder: is this kind of shock-and-awe a step toward peace, or the very thing that makes peace impossible?
My kneejerk reaction? It’s a calculated show of force. Like: “Now that we’ve hit you where it hurts, let’s talk.” There’s historical precedent for that logic. Countries often negotiate more seriously when the cost of not doing so suddenly skyrockets.
But then again, it could just as easily be a move that blows up any real chance at a ceasefire. Russia’s already calling it "our Pearl Harbor." If that’s the emotional framing on their side, won’t this just entrench them further? Dig in their heels? Stall negotiations? Or worse—retaliate even harder?
Maybe this is the paradox of war: the road to peace is sometimes littered with precision drone strikes and contradictory intentions. You push your opponent just far enough to rethink everything—without pushing them over the edge.
But honestly, I don’t know. That’s the scariest part.
What do you think? Does this attack help end the war—or extend it?
